Clare Caulfield
A local artist-printmaker, Clare Caulfield is one of Saltaire's most popular exports. Clare has exhibited her work at Magic Number Three for a number of years. She is perenially sought out by collectors and admired by those new to her distinctive style. Clare currently exhibits new work inspired by her recent travels to Istanbul and Rome.
Clare's signature sketchy style is instantly eye-catching and appealing, then also rewards the viewer with an impressive amount of detail in her line work and imagery. Her use of colour or monochrome is evocative of the scene she depicts, such as the bold black lines of Boutique Shopping, County Arcade, Leeds (opposite) suggesting the leaded glass ceiling in the building; and the subtle, earthy colours of Grand Canal from Academia Bridge reflecting the faded facades that line the canals of Venice.
'Clare Caulfield trained at Bradford College gaining a Foundation in Art & Design. She went on to graduate with a First Class Honours Degree in Surface Pattern Design from Staffordshire University in 2000.
Since then Clare has continued to develop her highly individual drawing style and has exhibited throughout the country, with galleries including the Crafts Council Gallery Shop and CCA Galleries at The Affordable Art Fair in London. Clare's work documents her travels to cities including Venice, New York, London and Paris. She is as much inspired by Saltaire Village right on her doorstep!
Drawing has always been an important part of Clare's work. She is fascinated by architecture be it the Midtown skyscrapers of Manhattan, The Grand Canal in Venice or The Royal Albert Hall of London, she strives to create spontaneous lively linework. Clare enjoys the scratchy line quality achieved using dip pen & ink, the weight of the line altering with the amount of pressure applied.'
Clare produces her prints at the West Yorkshire Print Workshop, where she also teaches, using techniques such as screenprint and drypoint. The format of her work varies too, from limited edition mounted prints on paper to printed canvas blocks, and even individually screenprinted cards. Clare also takes digital print images from her original painted drawings to produce vibrantly coloured prints and handmade cards.
